It’s kind of like the old saying: “You never know when you’ll need the help you need.” This is a bit of a stretch, but it is one I’ve always loved and have a lot of fun doing it.
My sister often says to me, “Hey, you’re not the first person to ever do etowah, so don’t get too excited.” It’s a gentle, flowing stretch that is as unique and fun as it is relaxing, and it doesn’t give you any cramps or soreness. The one caveat is that you can only do it on a mat, and you can’t bend, so you have to be careful to keep your back straight.
I love doing etowah. It is one of my favorite stretching poses, and I get to be in the company of trees. I have no idea what they do, but the idea is to get the stretch of all our muscles, as well as the blood flowing right to the surface of the heart, and the entire body gets a jolt of energy.
The only way that I know of to do etowah is to get back to some yoga classes, for example, and just get my feet together.
Etowah is also the name of the game for a yoga class at the end of the day. We call it “sumbagasot”, the word for “mindfulness”, because it means “to do something”. When we’re in the mood, I use that word again to describe my mind, like when I’m standing on the mat for a long time.
Sumbagasot isn’t the only way to get your mind off your yoga. You can also use a meditating pillow, and then just sit down and just breathe deeply. I think it’s great.
It’s true that the concept of total detachment is a bit too abstract for most of us. We all need to take a lot of mindfulness, and even some yoga, to get into the moment. We all need to get into it, and to practice. It’s also important to remember that many times a person has to take an extreme amount of action to keep the mind off of their body.
I’ve heard plenty of people say, “I can’t be bothered to go to yoga.” I think the time it takes for the mind to be fully engaged, in a meditative way, can be up to about an hour. So if you’re feeling a bit stressed out when you’re on the mat, consider stretching or taking a short walk first thing in the morning.
I think yoga is one of the most important things to do when youre under the gun, it can make it easier to stay calm and centered, plus it helps to relieve stress from a physical standpoint. When I was getting my first yoga teacher training I was told that the best part of my training was the fact that I could work out in my car, and there was a little bit of training time in the car (I did this for 2 hours with my instructor).
Like most people, I have a deep seeded fear about being in a public place. It’s very hard to get into a position where you cant see (or hear or smell) other people, or where you cant get to a space that makes sense on an intuitive level, where you can just focus on the moment, and relax. This is especially true when youre under a lot of pressure. Being able to relax and focus on the actual task at hand can make all the difference.
